Here’s a simple, classic comfort dish—fried cabbage with onions and bacon. It’s cheap, savory, and surprisingly satisfying.
🥬 Fried Cabbage with Onions and Bacon
Ingredients:
- 1 medium cabbage (sliced or chopped)
- 6–8 strips bacon (chopped)
- 1 onion (sliced)
- 2–3 cloves garlic (optional)
- Salt (to taste)
- Black pepper (to taste)
- 1–2 tablespoons oil or butter (only if needed)
- Optional: chili flakes or paprika
🔥 Instructions:
- Cook the bacon
In a large pan, fry chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove some fat if there’s too much, but leave a little for flavor. - Sauté onions
Add sliced onions to the bacon fat and cook until soft and slightly golden. - Add cabbage
Stir in chopped cabbage. It will look like a lot at first but will shrink down quickly. - Season & cook down
Add salt, pepper, and garlic (if using). Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized. - Finish
Add bacon back in, mix well, and taste for seasoning.
💡 Tips:
- Don’t rush the cabbage—letting it brown slightly gives the best flavor
- If it sticks, add a splash of water to deglaze the pan
- Adjust salt carefully since bacon is already salty
🔄 Variations:
- Add potatoes for a more filling meal
- Add vinegar or lemon juice for a tangy twist
- Add chili flakes for heat
- Swap bacon with sausage or skip meat for a vegetarian version
